The Long Island Serial Killer

The Long Island Serial Killer (also known as the Gilgo Killer or the Long Island Ripper) is a serial killer who is believed to have murdered at least ten people in the Long Island area. He targets prostitutes, who were often contacted from the online bulletin board Craigslist, and has been in operation for at least fifteen years. The Long Island Serial Killer dumps the bodies of his victims along Ocean Parkway, a fifteen mile highway that traverses Jones Beach Island on Long Island, New York. The killer dumps his victims, unburied in thick brush, often only a few feet from the roadway. Some victims’ bodies lay undiscovered for over a decade.

The Phantom of Heilbronn blunder - "Woman Without a Face" named Germany's most dangerous woman

DNA evidence linked her to over 40 crimes including a string of six murders over sixteen years, dozens of high-profile thefts, and a deadly arson case. After DNA evidence linked her to the murder of a policewoman, a $400,000 bounty was placed on her head but the female serial killer dubbed the “Phantom of Heilbronn”, described by police as “the country’s most dangerous woman”, cleverly evaded an extensive police manhunt for over 15 years. When her DNA evidence was found on documents belonging to a person who had died in a fire, police took a step back, reevaluated the cases, and determined that their mysterious criminal was the last person they would have ever suspected – and she was “hiding” in plain sight.

New virus sweeps country - has wiped out more than 10% of America's pig population with no end in sight

It struck suddenly, last May, at a hog farm in Ohio. Now, a year later, it has spread to 30 states around the United States, wiping out 10 percent of the U.S. pig population. The virus, known as porcine epidemic diarrhea virus, or PEDv, targets the lining of a pig’s small intestine, causing extreme diarrhea. It’s highly contagious, extremely potent (a tablespoon of PEDv is enough to wipe out the entire U.S. hog herd) and spreads by contact with infected manure or feed. Nearly every pig infected will die – it has already killed 7 million of America’s 63 million pigs sending pork prices through the roof.

High-speed UFO caught on film bursting from clouds near passing airplane

An interesting video of a high-speed UFO emerging from a cloud has shown up YouTube. The location where the video was shot has not been divulged but it is believed to have been shot on April 25, 2014 using a 300mm lens. Several factors lend credence to its authenticity but at least one factor (in my opinion) casts a bit of doubt on its legitimacy.

John Wayne Gacy - the Clown Killer

John Wayne Gacy, Jr. (March 17, 1942 – May 10, 1994) was an American serial killer. Between the years 1972 and 1978, before he was arrested, convicted, and later executed, Gacy raped and murdered thirty three young boys. He buried 29 of of his victims in the crawl space underneath the basement of his home. When the crawlspace filled with bodies, he began dumping his vicitims in the Des Plaines River. He became known as “Killer Clown” because of the popular block parties he would throw for his friends and neighbors, entertaining children in a clown suit and makeup under the alias “Pogo the Clown”

Don't worry - it's only a huge venomous snake that attacks you while you sleep

Reeko doesn’t want to make any kids have bad dreams but figures most people would like to know that the Australian mulga snake has been found to attack people in their sleep. Besides, most kids don’t live in Australia, where this sneaky snake lives, and for the Australian kids, well, Reeko figures Australians are so tough their parents will probably use this news as a bedtime story to help their little ones fall asleep.

Do animals use tools? Dolphins do. They use sponges gripped tight in their mouth to catch fish.

Long known to be amongst the smartest members of the animal kingdom, researchers have discovered that dolphins, like people, use tools to help them hunt and capture their food. Researchers studying dolphins in Shark Bay off the coast of Australia, noticed that more than half of the dolphins hunted for food while holding sponges in their mouth. Apparently the dolphins prod the ocean floor with the sponge in order to stir up special types of fish.

Strange smoky ghostly figure captured on video gliding through stands during Bolivian soccer game

A strange ghostly figured was captured on video during the taping of a Bolivian soccer game last week. The dark silhouetted figure can be seen gliding at a fast, steady clip through the crowd. The ghostly figure seemingly passes through fans and a concrete barrier separating two sections of the stadium’s stands. Fans do not seem to react as the smoky figure speeds by (or through) them.

Oldest (1894) known photograph of Bigfoot surfaces

An unusual (but well circulated) photo of a purported dead Bigfoot has been discovered to have been taken over 100 years ago. According to Bigfoot Casebook, the photo was shot in 1894 in western Canada by trappers who encountered the Bigfoot creature near their cabin and promptly shot him dead.

Miracle - boy survives sub-zero temperatures and near-zero oxygen during five-hour flight in wheel well of airplane

It’s a rare event and even rarer if the person attempting it survives. The FAA says that since 1947, there have been around 100 people known to have stowed away in wheel wells of an airplane. Most of them died. But this week a 16-year-old boy survived a five-hour flight from California to Hawaii hidden in a wheel well of a commercial Boeing 767 airplane. Aviation experts are calling it a “miracle”.

What causes the breathtaking bluish turquoise color of the Rio Celeste river?

The Rio Celeste is one of Costa Rica’s most spectacular rivers. Its breathtaking light bluish turquoise color is wonderfully unique making it a favorite visiting place for tourists and locals alike. How the Rio Celeste gets its unique color is a phenomenon caused by an unusual chemical reaction made possible by its proximity to a volcano and natural hot springs.

ASIMO (the robot) has learned some new amazing tricks!

ASIMO is a remarkable humanoid robot built by Honda that looks a bit like a kid in a spacesuit. He is often shown off at trade shows in order to convince people that robots will not revolt and take over the world. So far, ASIMO can run (meaning he can chase you down!), climb stairs (meaning there’s nowhere you can hide!!) and screw the lid off of a bottle (meaning he can twist your neck!!!). And he can kick a soccer ball and dance.

Is your phone, TV, or computer melting your brain?

You may not have known this but every day you are holding a high-powered microwave transmitter (cellphone) directly against the side of your head. If you feel like this is making you smarter or promoting the growth of superpowers – don’t. Cell phones generate electromagnetic fields (EMF) and emit electromagnetic radiation (EMR) which may be bad for your health (OMG).

Obama: NSA must divulge unknown bugs like Heartbleed - unless the bug works to their advantage

In January 2014, in the midst of the NSA scandal, President Obama decided that the NSA must divulge any undisclosed flaws in Internet security that they were aware of. This means if the NSA is aware of software stack bugs like the recently discovered Heartbleed bug, they must publicly acknowledge the bug. But detractors have noted that a major loophole exists in the policy as stated by Obama

During an era of public outcry against government corruption, the Supreme Court conservatives strike down limits on campaign contributions

Yesterday, the Supreme Court continued to ignore the voice of U.S. citizens, striking down a decades-old cap on the total amount any individual can contribute to federal candidates. The justices said in a 5-4 vote that Americans have a right to give the legal maximum to candidates for Congress and president. According to the Supreme Court, caps on campaign contributions restrict a person’s First Amendment free speech rights.

Killer sponges from the deep sea - they're real and growing in numbers!

It was only about 20 years ago that scientists discovered that some sponges are carnivorous, meaning – they eat other animals! Since then, scientists have identified about a half-dozen of the squishy little slayers. Today however, we add four new species to the list. The newly discovered carnivorous sponges live on the deep seafloor in the Pacific around California. At the moment of discovery, the scientist attributed with the amazing new find, was reported to have said, with great excitement and zeal, “Aaahhh!!! Where’s my finger?!?”

Unexplained - Cherry tree seeds sent to space station grow into mutant trees on earth

As part of an educational program for Japanese children, several cherry tree stones (the hard inner layer that contains the seed) were carried to the International Space Station by Japanese astronaut Koichi Wakata in November 2008. Once returned to earth, the seeds were planted in various locations throughout Japan with expectations that the cherry trees would mature and blossom several years later. Surprisingly, and with no scientific explanation, the plants somehow blossomed years earlier than expected – and with a bizarre mutant flower formation that nobody has seen before.

Lewis-Clark Valley Serial Killer - frustrated police know who killer is but lack evidence needed to make arrest

During those three years in the late 70′s, five youth disappeared from the Lewis-Clark Valley area. When body parts were found wrapped in black garbage bags, floating in the nearby Snake River, police knew they had a serial killer running rampant in their community. They were even certain they knew who the killer was. Regardless, lack of evidence and one critical missing person rendered them unable to make an arrest of the person they were “99% sure” committed the evil acts.

No replacement for a lost body part is going to be as good as the original (at least not yet), but in special cases, such as with professional drummer Jason Barnes, scientists can come pretty close. Jason lost his arm after an accident at his job and afterward found that, although he could still play his drums, it just wasn’t quite the same as before. NASA;s Curiosity rover captures odd shard of light bursting from surface of Mars

We’re not going to file this one under paranormal events just yet but still, it’s an interesting development. Eagle eyes have spotted an odd shard of light that seems to be erupting from the surface of Mars. Altered Dimensions verified that the photo is available on NASA’s website and has not been altered in any way. Two explanations thus far include missing photo image data (not likely since the light shows a distinct rounded-bottom and seems to overlay the terrain above and behind it) or possibly a reflection off of, well, we’re not sure what it would be reflecting off of and hence, the mystery.

Hate to bum you out but guess what? Global warming may be worse than we thought.

Here’s a call to all little scientists out there – we need to find a reasonable way to stop or slow the global warming trend occurring around the planet and today, that call just got a little louder. Scientists at Florida State University have found that global warming, believed to be caused by large quantities of “greenhouse gases” that have been released into the air, is getting increasingly worse because of, eh, global warming.

The Philip Experiment - did a 1972 scientific experiment conjure a spirit or create a real ghost?

With the popularity of the 2014 movie The Quiet Ones, interest in an historic event known as The Philip Experiment has peaked. What many do not know is that The Philip Experiment was an actual historic research project conducted by a Toronto organization in 1972 in an effort to prove that paranormal entities such as demons, spirits, ghost, and poltergeists were manifestations produced by human will through expectation, imagination, and visualization. A prominent group of citizens, three men and five women with no interest in the occult, participated in the study, the results of which not only shocked the group but stunned the world. The how and why of The Philip Experiment has never been answered and left many wondering – Did the group accidentally summon a demonic or spiritual entity or did they actually create a ghost?

Beyond eerie - photographer accidentally captures couples' suicide leap from bridge

The Wahuan Yangtze bridge, located in the Hubei province in central China, has been dubbed a “lovers’ leap” after the number of people who commit suicide there each year. In 2013, a photographer standing on a viewing platform was snapping pictures of the bridge, which was shrouded in an eerie fog, when he inadvertently captured these memorable photos of a couple’s suicide leap. As he said after the incident, he never even realized the tragedy he had captured on film.

How big is space? New facts from NASA about the El Gordo galaxy cluster blow our mind.

A visitor to the lab once asked Reeko how big space was and the lab tour had to be cancelled. In short, Reeko answered with “really, really, really big” but what he really did was add a bunch of “reallys” to make the point that space was “really big”. There were so many “reallys” that after about 20 minutes, the visitors got anxious (one thought Reeko was having a “spell”) and the entire tour had to be called off for the day. For kids that have visited the lab, this explains why the sign at the entrance says “Be curious – ask any question you want (except for how big space is)”.

Captured on deer cam - couple discover images of UFO rising/descending from night sky

Rainer and Edit Shattles of Jackson County, Mississippi were quite perplexed after reviewing video from their “deer cam” that had been set up in an open field on their 150 acres of land. On February 16, 2014, the deer cam, which is triggered by an infrared sensor and snaps images of deer as they approach the deer feeder, revealed a set of odd hovering lights descending from the night sky. The Shattles are baffled, never imagining they would be caught up in a world-wide UFO mystery that has become known around the Internet as, the Deer UFO Photos.

Books bound with human skin in the Harvard Library collection? According to Harvard’s Directory of University Libraries, “without extensive genetic testing, Harvard librarians still do not have the foggiest notion of how many volumes wrapped in human hide exist throughout the system.” But they have identified three books that yes, are bound with real human skin – and they’re not the only library that houses such gruesome works.

Alligator vs. electric eel. The shocking video that stunned the, err, alligator.

The electric eel generates electricity that it uses to catch prey and protect itself if attacked. In the video below, a hungry South American alligator corners an electric eel on the bank of a small river. The alligator, whom we all know is surely not too bright, decides to make a meal of the electric eel. As the alligator bites down on the eel, the eel’s natural reflexes kick in, it begins its electric discharge (which it can do for about an hour), and well, see for yourself.

Insane video shows hurtling meteorite zooming mere feet from falling skydiver

Researchers are still studying the video but thus far, the only explanation they can find is that the huge tumbling object that zooms mere feet by the falling skydiver is – a meteorite! If this turns out to the be real identity of the mysterious object, as thus far all evidence suggests it really is what it appears to be, this will be the first time a meteor in “dark flight”, the portion of its fall to Earth when it does not emit fiery light, has been captured in photography

NASA's Cassini spacecraft provides evidence of an ocean of water underneath Saturn's moon

Scientists had long thought that Saturn’s moon Enceladus had an ocean of liquid water underneath its thick, icy surface (in 2004, NASA scientists saw water vapor and ice spewing from vents near the moon’s south pole). Today. NASA’s Cassini spacecraft revealed actual evidence that their guess was correct – an ocean lies hidden inside the moon.

After at least four villagers dead, 2,200 lb. man-eating crocodile captured in Uganda

A one-ton crocodile was captured at Lake Victoria, Uganda yesterday. The beast had already killed at least four men (some reports indicate six) and injured many others when villagers begged the Uganda Wildlife Authority to hunt the creature down. After a four-day search, the 20-foot croc was captured using meat on a hook, towed to shore, and placed on a flatbed truck

The United States’ method of keeping time was already very accurate but today, took a giant leap forward with the introduction of the NIST-F2 atomic clock. Scientists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have been building the NIST-F2 for about 10 years in hopes of replacing the aging F1 which has been used to keep the official U.S. time since 1999. The NIST-F2 clock is used to keep the official time in the United States and is shared with the International Bureau of Weights and Measures in Paris, France.

One-ton (2,200 pounds) man-eating crocodile caught in Uganda

The 2,200 pound bad-boy crocodile had already killed four men and injured many more when the villagers, who were terrified to approach Lake Victoria where the man-eater lived, finally had enough. Angry villagers approached the Uganda Wildlife Authority (presumably with torches in hand) demanding they do something about it – and they did. After a four-day search, the man-eating croc was trapped by officials using the old “meat on a hook” trick. The crocodile measured about 20 feet long, weighed in excess of one ton, and was estimated to be about 80 years old (yeah, I know, you’d think with 80 years of life experience behind him, he wouldn’t have fallen for the “meat on a hook” trick).

Did this Texas family just capture a live Chupacabra? [PHOTOS]

Jackie Stock’s husband, Bubba, was stunned on Sunday when he discovered a large, dark, hairless, growling creature eating corn outside their Ratcliffe, Texas home. He called to his wife to come take a look to which she replied, “Bubba, that looks like a baby chupacabra!” The couple managed to capture the mysterious beast in a small cage. Is this the legendary Chupacabra or a common mammal hosting a parasite that has caused all of its hair to fall out? The mythical creature has never been proven to exist, but many people have often claimed to have seen animal of which there are many different descriptions.

Japan's Yakuza mobsters launch new, public relations website

Japan’s biggest organized crime syndicate, the Yakuza, has launched its own website, the content of which, is not what you would expect. Spurred by a poor public image, membership in the Yakuza fell to an all-time low in 2013, slipping below 60,000 members for the first time. The Yakuza’s new website is an attempt to counter their image as “antisocial forces” and instead, show it as a friendly, neighborhood organization bent on improving the quality of life for Japan’s citizens.

The Northern and Southern Lights (Aurora Borealis or Aurora Australis)

The northern and southern lights are caused by energetic charged particles from the sun colliding with gas particles in the sky. These charged particles arrive from the sun via solar winds and are directed into the air by the Earth’s magnetic field. The lights can form as low as 50 miles above the earth to has high as 400 miles from the earth’s surface.
