Bickering politicians are nothing new and the antics of today’s politicians are tame compared to the escapades of yesteryear. On July 11, 1804, the United States Vice President, reacting to insults from the former Secretary of the Treasury, challenged his foe to a duel during which he shot and killed his opponent. Burr was charged with murder in both New York and New Jersey. The charges were eventually dropped although the incident ruined Aaron Burr’s political career.
